Constructing a new bespoke pergola around a mature Wisteria vine
The client dreamed of having the pergola in their front garden rebuilt whilst saving a mature Wisteria vine that each year would drape its lush purple flowers for the bees whilst filling the air with its aroma, adding beauty to their garden and the street as a whole.

Design
The pergola would be roughly octagonal in shape and weaved into the existing post locations. The posts would be hand crafted to eight sides, chamfered to the base, with special treatment for the post bases to last decades and a zero concrete approach to post setting to increase longevity and reduce environmental impact.
The wood grain would be enhanced with a natural wood stain. Hidden behind the trellis a small drystone stacked rockery would retain an earth bank from encroaching into the seating area. Careful pruning of the other plants would neatly shroud the perimeter in vegetation and new trellis would be fitted as before to train young vines.
The beams spanning across were planned to look as minimalist and neatly fixed as possible in a singular-plane raft style.
The Finished Bespoke Pergola

The finished pergola in all its glory, sympathetically crafted to achieve the clients vision. The techniques used to construct this particular pergola, combined with its naturally derived geometric strength, will see the beautiful Wisteria vine flourish into the future, and again provide a serene and spacious seating area underneath for when they are gardening or socializing.
